Is Chivalry Dead?

Or is it just to embarrassed to be seen in public these days?

Tink over at Pickled Beef offered up a challenge, because she was feeling down about people in general behaving like self-centered boors.

The challenge is to do a chivalrous act sometime this weekend, some good deed that you don't expect reward or thanks for. Then either post about it or tell her about it in her comments on Monday.

I think this is a wonderful idea, because frankly I don't see a lot of people letting others in front of them in a grocery store line, or offering their seat on a bus, or holding open doors anymore.

I thought I would pass this along to the few readers I have that maybe don't also read her blog and maybe we can get a movement started and then maybe chivalry won't be so embarrassed.

So, do a good deed, something kind, hold a door open whatever you fancy and let Tink or me know. You won't win anything, but I'll bet you feel a bit better about yourself after.

Have a good weekend all.

P.S. To read a wonderful post about my new hero Casey go to Knight's Blog.

Damned fine idea. Chivalry really has nothing to be embarrassed about.

I know, Casey's a good guy.

Leah, you are right. We just need to coax it out of hiding.

Gary, yes he sure is.

Chivalry certainly doesn't have anything to be embarrassed about, but is definitely scarce some days.

But, and I must ask - did I tell you this already?

We were at a funeral recently, and were leaving the funeral parlor. Someone came up to hubby and his buddy (who has recently recovered from a stroke) and said that another fellow had a flat tire. Said fellow suffers from Cerebral Palsy (I'm guessing, but he uses a cane), so hubby (who suffers from back trouble) and his buddy (yes, the one who recently recovered from a stroke) changed this fellow's tire for him whilst several much younger, much more able-bodied guys stood around in the 30C degree heat and watched.
Nope, chivalry ain't dead, and the Rancher and his friend proved it!

Sis, no, you hadn't told me about that. Of course, I knew the rancher was chivalrous.

I try to do my part to dispel the constant road rage around me. I do my best to let people in, or move over, or whatever, but even more importantly (for my own mental health) I say nice things while doing it: "c'mon in, there's room" or "Wow, you're in a hurry. I'll move over so you can get by." Of course, the other drivers don't know what I am saying & thinking, but it is a matter of practicing kindness and putting others first.

Kcinnova, I look at letting people in front of me when I am driving a s a bit of self preservation too. Good for you though.

I find the people who can't even reciprocate a simple morning hello the most baffling. If chivalry is not dead, then it is certainly sleeping. I think this is a great idea too.

Reb said...

Thanks David. Yes, that is baffling indeed.

wasn't the casey story wonderful!? I'm still smiling about it

A long time ago I made myself a promise to be 'Everyday Kind' and I know I miss the mark at times but I pretty much try every day.

I was at Tink's and couldn't get past the image (in my mind) of the ducks. I had to leave.

Dianne, yes Casey is sure a wonderful guy. Good promise to make yourself and I hear you about how hard it can be some days.

Good manners and being polite has never gone out of style. Besides it provides good karma for a person to do an act of kindness with no reward, providing you do it on the spur of the moment without a thought.

Thank you for the awareness post! You're such a good egg. Maybe it'll snowball and we'll start a new chivalry revolution. We can only hope...

Ha,I just hope all this attention doesn't go to Casey's head! Ah, but I guess he deserves it.
Looks like Tink's post sparked a lot of weekend chivalry. I'm glad it caught on and got people to thinking about how they can help.

Barbara, you are so right.

Tink, I hope it does snowball - have you ever seen a snowball?

Knight, I'm sure Casey will remain the level headed man he seems to be - and yes, he deserves it.
